how do i?

i admit that i hate using capital letters, correct grammar, love run on sentences and I might be obsessed with the word yall but i am an English teacher and with that comes responsibility.  What is this responsibility you might ask... I am teaching the future leaders how to spell, write, read, and all that other fun stuff and let me tell you sometimes I think I rock, sometimes I think i suck.  I am trying to get my students to write a memoir but it's not going very well.  I understand that my kids are only in the 7th grade but most of them came to America only a few years ago so hello there has to be some memory of something right? NOPE!  All I hear is "I don't have memories" "I don't remember anything" "I don't ever do anything" I am sending this blog message out to my 14 readers and asking for help hence the title How Do I get my students to write a memoir?  I am not asking for a fifteen page memoir I am asking for a few paragraphs so that my students will have something to read in a few weeks when they go tutoring.  (I'll explain the tutoring later)

Does anyone know what I can do to jumpstart the writing?

Maybe you could expand the idea and have them put something into a "time capsule." And like 3 years later or when they graduate high school you could mail them their letters. Almost like they are writing a letter to themselves...

maybe that is too much??? :)
